Essential Questions:

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to identify what happened to the town of Pompeii.
2. Students will be able to understand that discovering buried structures of Pompeii relates to the discovery of Pompeii’s history.

Materials:

- 24 copies of Discovering Your Own History
- Pompeii…Buried Alive! By Edith Hunhardt
- Copies of Pompeii…Buried Alive! to be distributed
- Computer & Projector (for power point slides)

Procedure:

11:40- 11:45- Start with a K-W-L. Ask the students what they already know about Pompeii, Italy. Ask the students what they want to know about Pompeii, Italy, and then at the end of the lesson remember to go back and reflect upon what they learned.
11:45- 12:00- Read out loud Pompeii…Buried Alive! by Edith Kunhardt. Before reading, I will write down on the board important words for the students to remember while we read.
12:00-12:10- Explain to the students that I visited Pompeii and took pictures of many structures and artifacts that helped me learn about the history of Pompeii. Show them pictures of Pompeii.
Remember to refer to essential questions and objectives while looking at the pictures. Ask questions like, what does this structure tell you about the people who lived in Pompeii?
12:10-12:15- Complete K-W-L by writing some main things that the students learned from the book as well as the powerpoint presentation.
12:15-12:25- Students will start the activity, Discovering Your Own History. First, I will show them my completed example. After, I will walk around the classroom and provide assistance if needed.

Assessment:

- I will know that the students understood the lesson based on their responses during the “what did you learn” section of the K-W-L.
- I will also know that students understood the lesson based on their responses during the powerpoint presentation.
